salted caramel affogato

An affogato might be the best summertime treat. It doesn’t require turning on the oven, it’s super fast and easy to make, and it’s ice cream.

The term affogato means “drowned” in Italian – and in this case, we’re drowning ice cream with espresso. Because an affogato at it’s core only requires two ingredients, ice cream and espresso, you’ll want to make sure you’re using high quality ice cream and espresso for the best flavor and experience.

Buuuuut let’s talk about this affogato in particular, my salted caramel affogato. Salted caramel is just one of my favorite flavors ever because it’s the perfect balance of sweet and salty. I combined salted caramel ice cream with espresso, topped it with toasted coconut (for more flavor), and garnished it with ladyfingers. It’s sweet, slightly salty, and filled with coffee flavor. And when you pour the hot espresso over the cold ice cream it starts to melt the ice cream and leaves you with an upgraded version of a salted caramel latte, if you will. So let’s get into it!

ingredients for a salted caramel affogato:

affogato:
  • Salted Caramel Ice Cream: use your favorite salted caramel ice cream here. Alternatively, you can use vanilla ice cream and add on a homemade salted caramel sauce.
  • Espresso: use your favorite high quality espresso here. You can use instant espresso – simply combine the recommended amount of espresso with 30mL of hot water. If all you have your hands on is coffee, brew a super strong batch of it to use in the affogato.
  • Coconut flakes: optional, for flavor. Personally I think coconut & caramel is a top-tier flavor combo.
  • Ladyfingers: optional, for garnish. I liked adding these because it gives a similar experience to a tiramisu since the ladyfingers soak up some of the espresso and melted ice cream.

how to make a salted caramel affogato:

Making an affogato couldn’t be easier. Just add three small scoops of ice cream to a cup or bowl, brew a shot of espresso, and pour it right over the cold ice cream.
