Rich, thick, delicious European-style hot chocolate with eggnog.

eggnog hot chocolate

The cold winter months and the holiday season call for one main drink: hot chocolate. And today we’re making the most delicious hot chocolate of all time, European style with melted dark chocolate and eggnog. It’s ridiculously rich and creamy, and is essentially dessert in a cup. All you need is 5 simple ingredients: chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, salt, and eggnog!

what is european hot chocolate?

Once you try European hot chocolate, I don’t think you’ll ever go back to standard American hot chocolate. European hot chocolate is true to it’s name, it really is hot chocolate and uses chocolate rather than cocoa powder for the main flavor. It’s thick, rich, delicious, super creamy, and super filling.

ingredients and substituions

Dark chocolate: I recommend using your favorite dark chocolate to compliment how sweet the eggnog is. But if you’re a big sweetness fan, no judgement here! Use your favorite semi-sweet chocolate.

Cocoa powder: Here I recommend dutch processed cocoa powder. I love dutch processed because it’s a bit more chocolatey than natural cocoa powder, but natural cocoa will work as well.

Granulated sugar: just a little bit of a sugar for sweetness. I would leave this out if you’re using anything other than dark chocolate.

Salt: never skip on the salt! A pinch of salt here is going to help bring out the flavors.

Eggnog: the star of the show of course! Use your favorite eggnog: full-fat, low-fat, non-dairy, vegan – it’s all delicious.

how to make eggnog european hot chocolate

Here are the steps to make a delicious eggnog hot chocolate. The full recipe with instructions can be found at the end of this blog post.

Add all of the ingredients to a small saucepan.
Heat, stirring often, until everything is melted and cohesive.
Line a cup with marshmallow fluff to garnish, if desired.
Pour in the hot chocolate, serve, and enjoy!

why do you measure in grams?

My recipes are all written in grams because it is the most accurate way to bake. When you use a kitchen scale, you ensure that your baked goods turn out as close to the written recipe as possible. Plus, the cleanup is way easier when using a scale! I will provide standard cup measurements but please note that I have not tested the recipe using cup measurements and therefore can not guarantee your recipe will come out how mine did. Here is my favorite kitchen scale.
